Abstract:

Development-induced displacement (DID) is an inseparable part of India's economic progress, yet its negative impacts have fallen most heavily on marginalized communities, particularly tribal populations. Displacement of tribal communities in the name of development projects has become a serious problem, occurring on a large scale in India. Due to dams, mines, industrial areas, and infrastructure projects, millions of tribals have been deprived of their ancestral lands, forests, and local resources. This process not only causes economic loss but also leads to the destruction of social-cultural identity. This study analyzes the multifaceted impacts of development-induced displacement on tribal communities. Despite legal protections such as the Fifth Schedule, PESA Act, Forest Rights Act (2006), and Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act (2013), gaps in implementation and policy shortcomings have left tribals deprived of justice. Only through participatory planning, culturally sensitive rehabilitation policies, and ensuring tribal self-governance can a just and sustainable development framework be established.
