Abstract:
The exploration of the inner world of the human mind is an important literary trend in modern Bengali fiction. Society Many writers have created their works focusing on the human subconscious mind , repressed desires and mental conflicts, in addition to the external reality of life. Santosh Kumar Ghosh's story ' Dwidha ' is an excellent example of this psychological trend. This article attempts to analyze the human psychological aspects of the story, especially in the light of Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory. The central character of the story, Karuna, is outwardly an educated , elegant and socially respected woman , whose married life is seemingly happy and fulfilling. But the primitive instincts and repressed desires hidden deep in her subconscious mind gradually begin to manifest through her strange attraction to Sahis Gurubox. This attraction makes clear the conflict between human inner instincts and civilized social life. The conflict between the conscious and subconscious minds of humans is exposed through the interrelationship of these three characters in the story - Suprakash , Karuna and Gurubox . The course of events in the court and the subsequent secret assistance of Karuna for Gurubox's appeal give the story a deeper psychological significance. Through this story, Santosh Kumar Ghosh has shown that social norms , morality and the veil of civilization cannot completely suppress the subconscious instincts of man. As a result, a kind of mental conflict and duality can often be observed in human behavior. From this perspective, the story ' Dwidha ' can be considered an important example of psychological reality in Bengali literature.
